Mitch and Cam finally get the call they’ve been waiting for: a young woman has picked them to adopt her child, and she’s giving birth that very day in a Mexican border town. The guys are stunned and ecstatic, and realize that they have to move very quickly. Lily has a recital that evening, and though they are both crestfallen at the thought of missing it, they have no choice. Gloria accompanies the guys on their trip across the border as a translator for the Spanish speaking birth mother. And Jay has his own adventure as he’s left with an anxious Lily who isn’t sure she wants to perform in the recital... causing him to be grateful that his child rearing days are behind him.

Meanwhile, the Dunphy household is full of excitement as well: Alex is going to her first prom, and Haley has gotten a job. Claire and Phil couldn’t be more proud as they witness their little girls achieving these milestones. Of course, Haley has an ulterior motive. Getting a job and applying to community college (as she never heard back from the school where she was waitlisted) have the desired effect on Claire and Phil, but it’s all simply part of her master plan to get her parents on board with her real post-high school plans.
