Broadband Security (Wireless Tips)

Nearly a million New Zealanders have broadband subscriptions, but many people are NOT securing their wireless connections. This leaves the door wide open for people to use your broadband connection which could cost you money, or use up your data allowance. If you have a hard core hacker on your door step, they could access your personal documents and conduct illegal activities through your broadband connection. The police will probably come knocking on your door first!

There are four steps you should take to make sure your wireless is secure.

1. Change the default password immediately

It should be a strong alphanumeric password made up of a combination of capital letters, symbols and numbers for maximum security.

2. Turn on encryption

WEP and WPA are common encryption devices. However, they have both been broken in recent times. The current best encryption is WPA2. If your computer does not support this, it is even more important that you use a strong password.

3. Change the default SSID

This is the Network ID eg linksys. When someone finds a default SSID, they see it as a poorly configured network and are much more likely to attack it.

4. Disable broadcasting

The only way that people can attack your broadband and network is if they can see it! In the home, the broadcasting feature is unnecessary.
