The Comedy Gala will be screening on TV3 and On Demand. Stay tuned for details.
The opening night of the Festival is a lot like a first date. The excitement and anticipation. The glad rags. The laughs, and giggles and smirks. The start of something beautiful.
The Comedy Gala is the first date for many comedy fans across Auckland as it launches an annual love affair with the NZ International Comedy Festival; three week's of comedic, carnal delights. The Comedy Gala offers up an orgy of talent from the Festival, giving audiences a teaser of what's on offer in 2012.
When it comes to matters of the heart and the Gala, you want someone who knows what they’re doing. And we've got the man for the job. Performing in New Zealand for the first time, Greg Behrendt (USA) hosts this year's Gala, intent on charming audiences with his refreshingly honest opinions on matters of love, sex and romance.
Greg’s an acclaimed stand-up comedian, with critics praising his ‘sick delivery and taut writing’, and promising ‘guaranteed laughter’. If that’s not enough, Greg was also the co-author of the three million-copy best-seller He's Just Not That Into You, the male-perspective consultant for iconic television series Sex And The City and he’s appeared on The Tonight Show, Late Night with David Letterman and Comedy Central.
Joining Greg will be a swathe of irresistible internationals, including Stephen K Amos (UK), Jason Byrne (IRE),Marcel Lucont (FRA), Janey Godley (SCOT), Dead Cat Bounce (IRE), Craig Campbell (CAN) and Milton Jones (UK).
Add to the mix a cast of lovable local rogues: comedy superstar (and more famous than L&P) Rhys Darby (NZ), Fred Award winner and TV favourite Ben Hurley (NZ), Billy T Award winner Steve Wrigley (NZ), Urzila Carlson (SA/NZ), star of the Royal Variety Performance The Boy With Tape On His Face, and more!
Some of the finest emerging suitors Australia have to offer also make the sojourn to New Zealand. The Axis of Awesome (AUS) make their explosive New Zealand debut after acclaimed performances at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and Just For Laughs Montreal, and let’s not forget comedian (and former thrash-metaller) Steve Hughes (AUS).
