- Marty Johnstone to Carole Derwent.
Detective Constable Caroline Derwent Biography
While Ben was considered a bit of a loner; Carole was the more affable of the detective twosome.
Her skill and the results she got, earned her a sometimes grudging but universal respect in the job. As well a being a great cop, she was also good at being a mum of two young children. Apart from the odd niggle regarding her commitment to the job; her relationship with partner Max was solid. This strong foundation enabled Carole to work in an area for which she had a great passion: catching crooks. Sure, it was "Old Boys' Club", but she knew how to handle it.
Carole's friendship with Ben grew out of finding a fellow cop with the same ideals and drive. If anything, she was the more pragmatic of the two: she knew when she was trying to push shit uphill and Ben envied Carole her understanding of police politics.
Carole provided both staunch support and a cautionary voice for Ben in a mutual quest to see the fight against drugs put on a proper footing. When it came down to it, they both travelled by the same, very accurate moral compass. And, just maybe, when things start to get really tough, there's a sense that the professional bond between them could grow into something else.
Holly Shanahan Biography
"She is a woman operating in a man’s world at a time when women were just starting to get recognition for being more than mothers and wives. She is a good mother and a great cop, so she represents for the time that women could do both, they are not just confined to being one or the other. In the show she loses her way somewhat in trying to do the right thing, but her kids and family are always the driving force beneath it."
Holly is a two-time nominee at the NZ Chapman Tripp Theatre Awards, and in 2008 won Supporting Actress of the Year at the Qantas NZ Film Awards for her role as Cheryl Rose in Second Hand Wedding. Her television and film credits include Rush, Bed of Roses, Power Rangers, Jungle Fury, Welcome to Paradise, and Outrageous Fortune. Her stage credits include Skin Tight, The Last Days of Judas Iscariot and The Cherry Orchard.
