If you’re going to marry someone, do you need to get along with their family?

“That would be good," Dr. Phil answers. "That would be good if you get along with their family, but here’s the thing: You may have some psycho mother-in-law or psycho father-in-law that you just can’t get along with. Then you and your potential spouse need to sit down and have a very definite strategy for how you’re going to handle that because there’s no room for divided loyalty. So, if you’ve got problems with them, you’ve got to work it out about how you’re going to handle it, where the boundaries and fence lines are going to be.”

But you do need to know a lot about them, be able to answer questions their values, their beliefs, their expectations, their goals, and what their history has been, but not with gory details.”
