Character Bio

Though an accident from childhood left Artie Abrams paralyzed from the waist down, he doesn't let his wheelchair hold him back from playing guitar, popping wheelies, beat-boxing, or playing Dance Dance Revolution with his hands. But his disability sets him apart from other kids, which sometimes makes him easy pickings for school bullies.

Will Schuester welcomes Artie into the glee club. Though he projects a casualness about his disability, Artie is hurt when the glee team initially rejects Will's suggestion that they raise money to pay for a handicapable bus so they can all ride together to Sectionals. Will orders the kids to experience life in wheelchairs for a week to better understand the difficulties Artie struggles with every day. The team eventually choreographs a special wheelchair-bound routine of "Proud Mary" in his honor.

Artie gently pursues teammate Tina Cohen-Chang, with whom he believes he shares a connection due to her disability: a stutter. He's aghast when he learns Tina's been faking the speech impediment, but he later decides to forgive her.
