LL Cool J Talks About The New Season of NCIS: LA

LL Cool J Interview

How does it feel to be back on NCIS: Los Angeles for Season 4?

Season 4 is a lot of fun - it's challengeing but very rewarding. We keep getting to act out these really cool stories and all of these really interesting scenarios come up. We learned so much about tactics - I feel like I've been immersed in law enforcement.

Were definitely having fun and thankfully the chemistry is there off-camera as well as on-camera and it's exciting.

How do the events of the Season 3 finale affect the team in Season 4?
It's a cliffhanger with a cliffhanger because when Season 4 starts there are some really shocking surprises that happened and some really strange things happening that people probably are not expecting.

How would you describe the chemistry of the cast in Season 4?
I think as a group we're learning more and more about how to bounce off each other and getting better in terms of just understanding each other and what our individual strengths are and how we can contribute to the team effort, so it's cool.

What is revealed about Sam’s personal life in Season 4?
We do learn a little bit more about Sam's character. We start to peel back the onion, so to speak, a little bit but you have to wait and see. It gets pretty intense and pretty interesting.

Why does Sam remove his wedding ring?
This is a guy who is committed to his job, he is committed to his country, he is committed to the western ideology and preserving democracy and sometimes the ring comes off because of that.

Can we expect more twists and turns in Season 4?
There is a flowchart, bell curve and everything else you could imagine in it. It's all over the place. It's a roller coaster ride and some really cool things happen. I think there are tidbits of information and teases and shadings and foreshadowing of things to come. It's going to be a lot of fun. People are going to be shocked, I'm telling you!

Is it a challenge balancing humor with the more serious elements on the show?
That's real life - the idea that you go from sad to happy, from happy to sad and everything in between. That's what a living, breathing human being goes through. People experience different emotions at different times and I think these characters are no different. This world is no different. These characters are very much human. They are very vulnerable. They are not perfect. All of them are flawed in a different way, just like us. I think because of that our humanity is really revealed, people get to see the world through our eyes in a way that's similar to how they may see the world. It's challenging sometimes because you may shoot things out of sequence, or you may have a long monologue, but ultimately it's rewarding because it's human and it's real. I love that part of it.

How would you explain the continued success of NCIS: Los Angeles around the world?
It's fun to see characters that don't take themselves too seriously but do take their work seriously. They're living, breathing human beings and they're out here trying to stop the bad guys from hurting the good guys. It's pretty much that simple. Now as far as why people like this specific show, I don't know. Your guess is as good as mine. I'm just grateful that people are enjoying it and I hope that they continue to watch and turn us on.

Is there an item from wardrobe that you feel identifies your character?
It's obvious that Sam Hanna always wears those shirts, so that would probably be – me and Chris often laugh it's like we're wearing pajamas because our clothes are so comfortable on the show. We feel really comfortable.

If you could play any other character on “NCIS: Los Angeles” who would it be?
I don't think I would want to play another character. I like Sam Hanna. I like my character. Maybe Kensi? I don't know. She gets to kick a lot of butt.

Why should fans tune in to watch Season 4 of NCIS: Los Angeles?
If you've been watching the show, you should enjoy this season because we're still having a lot of fun, we still ribbing each other and we don't take ourselves too seriously but at the same time, there is still the action. So there is the banter, the action, but then also a few little things, well big things, that might surprise people.

I think Season 4 will be more compelling and exciting because we peel yet another layer off the onion and the closer you get to the middle, the more pungent and strong it gets, baby. So I think people will enjoy it. Hopefully. I like it.

What would you like to say to fans of the show?
If you've watched the show, hopefully you really, really enjoy this season and if you haven't watched the show, this is probably a good time for you to get on board because it'll spark your interest for sure.
