I have never been to Kensington in Whangarei; but that is where I find myself on my visit to Piece A Cake Café.

This café is hard to find. I discover it off the main road and signage is limited. This café really needs a special point of difference to bring in it’s customers.

I sample the free mini cup cakes in the car park at the local supermarket in a marketing campaign which were being enjoyed by the locals.

The cakes have been baked by the owner Tracy - a qualified pastry chef. Light, moist and beautiful. The café itself is small and it has beautiful pictures on the wall promoting Tracy’s work. The colour scheme is light and fresh.

Food aside – the café lacks decent coffee and the staff are very unimpressive with sloppy, dirty attire. When I bring up this point I immediately feel resistance to the fact that they need to introduce a uniform into this place. I do hope that this is remedied. Sloppy attire leads to sloppy attitude and service.

Piece a cake will find it hard to survive on cakes alone. For a café to survive it needs to entice customers with not only a decent breakfast menu but also a place where people will want to meet and spend time during the day in comfortable surroundings.

This café has many other other business opportunities that can be tapped into with the local Motels and Hospital. I only hope that Tracy finds the energy to make this work.
