Season 2, Ep 15 - Sexy
Emma calls a meeting of McKinley’s Celibacy Club to order; at present,
the only members are Rachel and Quinn. While both students have their
own reasons for joining the unpopular group, it becomes clear that Emma
may have reasons of her own for being there; not only does she
discourage the idea of actually having sex, she is clearly opposed to
the idea of even being curious about it.
Later in the Teachers’
Lounge, Emma tells Will she’s discouraged by her club’s dwindling
membership; their discussion is interrupted by the arrival of
substitute teacher Holly Holliday (subbing for the health and wellness
teacher who is “out with a mad case of herpes”.) Holly notes that while
celibacy is “a valid choice” for teenagers, it isn’t “realistic” in the
least; she offers that a majority of her students – including several
of the glee kids – are “particularly clueless” when it comes to sex
education. In the hallway, Santana approaches Brittany and suggests
they get together for one of their occasional girl-on-girl make out
sessions. Brittany refuses; she also mentions that she thinks she may
be pregnant. Despite her promise to keep Brittany’s secret, Santana
wastes no time sharing the news which eventually gets back to Artie –
who seems stunned and terrified by the realization he may be a father.
Artie’s worry is short-lived when Brittany reveals that the reason she
thinks she’s pregnant is because she’s recently seen a stork building a
nest on top of her garage. The near scare prompts Will to ask Holly to
help him educate his students about the dangers of being sexually
active, though he’s worried that an explicit discussion may prove to be
too titillating for the teens. Holly suggests they disguise their
message in song. In the choir room Holly tells the gleeks that she’s
not encouraging sex. She just thinks it’s important that they feel
“comfortable and confident” in their bodies; she begins to sing the
Joan Jett rocker “Do You Want to Touch Me?” Santana, Brittany and the
other kids join in.
Kurt and Blaine wait for coffee at the
Lima Bean; they are approached by Sue who – after revealing she’s the
new coach for rival show choir Aural Intensity - tells them she doesn’t
care who wins Regionals as long as it isn’t New Directions. To that end
she offers some “top-secret intel” including the fact that Will is
trying to get his team to up their “sexy” quotient and advises that the
Warblers do the same. Blaine takes the news seriously and calls an
emergency meeting of the Dalton Academy singers. Emma confronts Will
about Holly’s involvement with Glee Club; she thinks allowing the
forward thinking substitute to openly teach the kids about sex “stuff”
is a recipe for disaster. In an attempt to allow equal time for her
opposing argument, Will invites Emma and her Celibacy Club to sing a
song for the gleeks as well. Kurt, Blaine and the Warblers try out
their new sexiness on a group of girls from their sister school; they
sing “Animal” by Neon Trees. While Blaine and the others get positive
reviews from their all-female audience, Kurt’s sexy face looks more
sick than seductive. Back at McKinley, Lauren tells Puck about her
desire to become famous “like a Kardashian.” She tells him she wants
them to make a sex tape together. He is definitely interested.
Following
one of their make out sessions Brittany confesses to Santana that their
relationship is confusing to her; she thinks it’s better when (as with
Artie) there are “feelings” involved but Santana is of the opposite
opinion. Brittany suggests they talk to someone about their divergent
emotions. As Lauren and Puck research celebrity sex tapes, Holly breaks
the news that if they follow through with their plan they – due to
their ages – will both be guilty of child pornography. Brittany and
Santana approach Holly for advice about their situation; after
acknowledging that being gay isn’t about who one is “attracted to” but
rather who one falls in love with, she admits that sometimes it can be
confusing and uncomfortable to talk about. She suggests they sing a
song about their feelings in the hopes it will get a conversation
started; Santana says she has the perfect song and asks Holly if she
will sing it with them. Blaine coaches Kurt on his sexy “looks.”
Unfortunately, they are all the same: uncomfortable. Kurt offers that
he can’t look sexy because he doesn’t know “the first thing about sex.”
Blaine tries to initiate a conversation on the subject but Kurt is
clearly not ready to have “the talk” and certainly not with Blaine. At
McKinley Will asks Holly to help him rehearse a song he wants to
perform for the kids; they do a hot and sexy tango version of Prince’s
“Kiss.” As the song wraps up it is obvious the two teachers have
undeniable feelings for each other; they kiss and then kiss again. Will
confesses his amorous feelings and asks Holly out on a date; despite
the clearly mutual attraction she turns him down noting that she’s
“damaged goods” who tends “to break nice guys … like Wasa crackers.”
Blaine
goes to the tire shop and pays Burt a visit; after noting that Kurt is
“the most moral, compassionate person” he’s ever met, he tells the
senior Hummel that someone needs to talk to Kurt about sex before he’s
forced to learn things on his own. Burt is uncomfortable about the
entire subject but seems to get the message. In the choir room Holly,
Santana and Brittany sing Stevie Nicks’ “Landslide.” The
heart-wrenching song is beautifully sung. When it is over, Brittany
asks an emotionally raw Santana, “Is that really how you feel?” Santana
nods and the two embrace, though they may not be any closer to solving
their particular problem than before. In the auditorium, Emma and the
Celibacy Club is joined by Emma’s husband Carl to perform the Starlight
Vocal Band’s “Afternoon Delight.” While the song is performed with
great earnestness, it becomes evident that the singers - most notably
Emma - are unclear about its true meaning: “sneaking out for a
‘nooner’.” Following their performance Carl approaches Holly and
(seeing as she is the acting sex-ed teacher) says he and Emma need to
make an appointment to speak with her.
That evening in the
Hummel home, Burt initiates “the talk” with his son; at first Kurt is
resistant to the conversation but his father convinces him it cannot
wait any longer. While Burt leaves “the mechanics” to be explained by
several pamphlets he picked up from the free clinic, he tells his son
the “important” part boils down to the inherent differences between the
way men and women feel about having sex. Burt says that with women it’s
more about the emotional connection, while with guys it’s all about the
physical; he goes on to say that in a homosexual relationship Kurt will
always run the risk of opting for what feels good rather than investing
in a relationship that is healthy for him and his self-esteem. Burt
concludes “the talk” by saying he wants his son to be able to have sex
when he’s ready, but counsels him to use sex “as a way to connect to
another person” and not to “throw (himself) around” like he doesn’t
matter. In Emma’s office she, Carl and Holly discuss the couple’s lack
of intimacy: apparently they have been wedded for four months and have
yet to consummate their marriage. Holly treads lightly when she asks if
Emma’s lack of interest in her “hot” husband is due to the fact that
she may still be in love with Will; Carl admits he has wondered the
same thing. When Emma is unable to deny the accusation (only admitting
she’s “confused” about her feelings) Carl says he will move out of
their home. An uncharacteristically emotional Santana approaches
Brittany; she confesses that she wants “to be” with Brittany but
despite the way she feels she can’t deal with the repercussions of
being openly gay. Santana begins to cry as she admits to loving
Brittany; she begs Brittany to say she loves her too. Brittany admits
she does love Santana but says she’s with Artie and it wouldn’t be
right to “dump him.” She adds that if they ever break up and Santana is
still single: “I am so yours.”
In the auditorium, Will works
out some “Finn-proof” choreography for Regionals when Holly enters; she
tells him her current teaching stint at McKinley is over but says she
has reconsidered the thought of them dating. She gives partial credit
for her change of mind to the realization (thanks to the Stevie Nicks
song) that she needs to try to find a relationship that will last more
than a few days; she also mentions that “seeing some other girl with
the hots for you” made her a little jealous. Will presses her to
elaborate on the latter comment but she brushes it aside. They kiss;
it’s on. Puck approaches Lauren; his reluctance to risk prison by
helping her with the sex tape has once again caused her feelings for
him to cool. He confesses that despite his history of constantly doing
“stupid things” he has come to the realization that their relationship
actually makes him look forward to starting the day (as opposed to just
regretting what he did the night before.) He tells her if she wants to
dump him over his refusal to make the sex tape, so be it. She resists
the urge to punch him and instead, they kiss passionately. In the
Celibacy Club the ranks have grown to include Santana, Sam, Brittany,
Artie, Puck and Lauren; only Emma is missing. During the meeting Puck
takes note of what appears to be a hickey on Quinn’s neck; despite her
assertion that the mark is merely a curling iron burn the fact is that
she and Finn are secretly having sex. In her bedroom Quinn wonders why
she and Finn need to continue keeping their renewed relationship a
secret; he says he’s worried that if Rachel found out it would “crush”
her and he doesn’t want anything to mess with their chance to win
Regionals. Quinn asks if he will break the news to Rachel after
Regionals; Finn says, “Sure.”
