Season 2, Ep 19 - Rumours
During an episode of her internet gossip/talk show “Fondue for Two,”
Brittany mentions (and confirms) the rumor that Santana “plays for the
other team.” Her guests Mercedes and Tina are shocked by the news.
An
“incognito” Sue meets with Terri at the Lima Bean; the coach tells
“Honey Badger” that her next move against Will and New Directions will
involve resurrecting McKinley’s school newspaper “The Muckraker.” She
plans to incite chaos within the club by spreading unfounded rumors
about them in the paper. Terri offers that Sue is always trying to
destroy the Glee Club from inside and suggests an alternative: bring
down New Directions by getting Will to leave. She says she has an idea
about how to do it. The next day, April Rhodes shows up at the school;
she tells Will she has written the libretto for a musical based on her
own life (which she hopes to take to Broadway) and asks Will for his
help with the songs. Rachel asks Finn to sing a duet with her at
Nationals; he is worried about how it may adversely affect his
relationship with Quinn. She wonders why he is concerned, considering
the “blind item” in The Muckraker that states Quinn and Sam were
recently spotted together at a motel. Finn confronts both Sam and Quinn
with the news item; while they both deny any wrongdoing there is
clearly something both of them are hiding. Santana storms into the
choir room newspaper in hand: she confronts Brittany about her “plays
for the other team” comment and the resulting item in the paper that
implies she is gay. The clueless Brittany defends her innocent
statement by saying, “You do play for another team. You used to be on
the Cheerios, now you’re only on the New Directions.” That night Will
and April discuss her musical but the conversation turns when he
expresses his concern over all the recent gossip-induced drama swirling
around the Glee Club. April offers that gossip and innuendo also
troubled the band Fleetwood Mac and says they put “all that drama to
good use” when they turned their in-fighting into one of the
best-selling albums of all time: “Rumours.” Will loves the idea of
doing a lesson devoted to a single album; the next day he and April
sing Fleetwood Mac’s “Dreams” for the gleeks. Afterwards, he tells the
class their assignment for the week is to put their own spin on a song
from the classic rock album. Later, Artie confronts Brittany and asks
if she is cheating on him with Santana. Despite her assertion that (per
Santana) fooling around with another girl isn’t cheating, Artie doesn’t
see it that way; he says Santana is taking advantage of her naiveté and
trying to break them up. Brittany tries to defend her friend but
Artie’s jealousy gets the best of him; he calls her “stupid.” She
storms off with tears in her eyes. Artie sings an emotional rendition
of Fleetwood Mac’s “Never Going Back Again” accompanied by Puck, Finn,
Sam and six other acoustic guitarists. That night, Finn and Rachel sit
in his truck and stake-out the American Family Motel; they see Sam exit
a room and are shocked to discover Kurt is with him. Also outside the
motel is Muckraker reporter Jacob Ben Israel; from a distance he takes
photos of Rachel and Finn together.
Several members of the
Glee Club meet to discuss what Finn and Rachel saw; none of them
believe Kurt would cheat on Blaine, let alone that Sam is gay. They all
agree they need more information before jumping to any conclusions.
Alone in the choir room, Santana sings an emotionally charged version
of Fleetwood Mac’s “Songbird” for Brittany. Afterwards, Brittany again
tries to convince Santana to go public with her true sexual
orientation; while the tearful Santana is still apprehensive, she does
agree to appear on “Fondue for Two” to discuss it. In the hallways,
Rachel notices Sam is wearing a jacket she knows belongs to Kurt; the
realization furthers her belief that the two male glee clubbers are
involved in a relationship. That night, Finn and Rachel return to the
motel to continue their surveillance; they spot Sam exiting the same
room as before but this time they see that he is with Quinn. The next
day, Brittany sits with Will to conduct an interview for The Muckraker;
while the questions are for the most part very personal in nature, Will
pauses when Brittany asks him if the rumor that he’s leaving McKinley
to perform on Broadway with April is true. The question catches Will
totally off-guard but he is not surprised to learn that this latest
rumor started with Sue. Will confronts Sue; he vehemently denies that
he’s leaving the school to pursue a professional career. Noting that he
is talented enough to be successful on Broadway, she wonders: “Why?”
Her question leaves him thinking.
With the latest issue of The
Muckraker making its way around the school, Finn and Quinn confront
each other: she is disturbed by Jacob’s item in the paper about him and
Rachel being spotted alone together in his truck while he is upset
about seeing her at the motel with Sam. Finn defends himself by saying
his conversation with Rachel revolved solely around them singing a duet
together; he turns the tables by questioning what she was doing at the
motel with Sam. Quinn tries to deflect his suspicions; while neither
seems satisfied with the other’s answers, they both agree they need to
trust each other. Their agreement leads to the couple performing a duet
of Fleetwood Mac’s “I Don’t Want to Know” for the Glee Club; while
everyone enjoys the performance, there is a palpable tension between
Finn and Quinn as they sing. Afterwards, Rachel notes that while the
duet with Quinn was good, it should be her who sings a duet with Finn
for Nationals, and Quinn – who has clearly rekindled her romance with
Sam – should sing with him. Quinn reasserts that nothing is going on
with her and Sam and states in no uncertain terms that if Finn wants to
sing with Rachel, it will spell the end of their relationship. In the
auditorium, Will and April rehearse the original song (“Nice to Meet
You Have I Slept with You”) from her musical; Emma enters unseen and
watches the fine performance from the rear of the theatre. The song
finished, April invites Will to accompany her back to New York to help
her bring her show to the stage; while he is clearly tempted by the
offer he declines, noting that his first responsibility is to the kids.
Emma quietly leaves the auditorium having witnessed everything. From
her bedroom, Britanny hosts a new installment of her internet
broadcast; apparently Santana has backed out at the last minute so
Brittany interviews her cat instead.
In the teachers’ lounge,
Will is pleased to see that Emma’s recent therapy is yielding results:
instead of hand polishing her fruit piece-by-piece, she is satisfied
with simply rinsing it (albeit for a half-hour) before eating. She says
that he has inspired her to take charge of her own destiny and – after
confessing that she saw him singing with April – encourages him to do
the same and seize the opportunity April’s show will afford him. Will
begins to cry; he says that she and the glee kids have brought so much
light into his life. He says he wants to go with April “so badly” but
doesn’t want to risk losing any of them. In the choir room, Rachel
performs Fleetwood Mac’s “Go Your Own Way.” Quinn takes note of the
fact that she directs most of the song directly at Finn and calls her
out on it. Rachel defends herself by again bringing up Quinn’s recent
apparent dalliance with Sam; the comment elicits responses from all the
glee clubbers until Sam has no choice but to finally speak up. While he
is clearly embarrassed to admit it, he confesses that ever since his
father lost his job, his family has been living in the motel. He says
Kurt was giving him new clothes to wear while Quinn was helping babysit
his two younger siblings. The shocking revelation leaves everyone
stunned and ashamed.
Sue, Terri and April meet in Sue’s
office; April thanks Terri for suggesting she ask Will for his help
with her musical: apparently, April has no idea about Terri and Sue’s
ulterior motives. April adds that despite her best efforts, Will shows
no sign of leaving McKinley as he can’t bring himself to break the bad
news to the kids; Sue offers that after the next issue of The Muckraker
– which will contain “the ultimate blind item rumor” about Will leaving
the school - is published, he will “follow his heart” to New York and
perform in April’s show. Finn and Rachel arrive at Sam’s family’s motel
room; they apologize for spying on him and for any part they played in
spreading gossip about him. Finn gives Sam a duffle bag of his old
clothes noting they will serve him better than anything he could get
from Kurt; they also return his (previously pawned) guitar that the
rest of the class chipped in on to get out of hock. Sam seems genuinely
touched by their concern. Back at school, Santana gives an interview to
Jacob; she continues to talk about her blooming relationship with
Karofsky while a sullen Brittany overhears her best friend continuing
to deny her true feelings. In the choir room, the kids question Will
about the latest rumor in the school’s paper; he assures them the rumor
is just that and says he intends to take them to Nationals adding: “We
are going to win.” The kids perform Fleetwood Mac’s “Don’t Stop
Thinking about Tomorrow” while a pensive Will sits in the audience next
to April.
