Julie visits 3 different cafes to see how they’re doing 18
months after the fatal earthquakes.
First up, Julie drops into “Black Betty”- a café in Madras St- in the
middle of the Red Zone.Ironically they
had only opened 3 weeks before the Feb 22 quake.
Next, Julie meets the team at “Under The New Red Veranda” in
the suburb of Linwood. The café has shifted into a new building after their old
premises was completely destroyed.
Julie ends her visit with a trip to “Addington
Coffee-Co-op”- a café owned by a trust. Profits go straight back into the local
community. There’s a shortage of function centres in Christchurch and the café has become a
popular location to stage events. Julie helps out at a “Pop-Up Fashion Show”
that takes place in the café after-hours.
