Episode 0414 "Rescue Me" Maureen Janely tells Sack she wants to sue her pastor, Kurt Joyner. She had an affair with him, and then he dumped her. Sack hands her off to Clarence, and then runs in to Andrea Michele. This time she wants to sue a business which takes the ashes of the departed and turns them into a diamond ring. The company lost Andrea’s mother’s ashes, and sent her a zirconium ring instead of a diamond. Andrea has Sack in her sights for her next conquest. Katie is assigned the case of Leo Morris, charged with felony forgery. When they meet there is instant chemistry between them. Leo has AIDS from a blood transfusion, and was given a short time to live. He signed over his life insurance policy to a company for an upfront cash settlement, and they agreed to cover his health insurance premiums as long as he lived. When new medications controlled his illness, the company wanted out of the deal. Leo needed the money to pay for the drugs that keep him alive, so he forged the company’s checks… and they caught him. Sack assigns Lorraine to help Clarence on the case.
Sack is upset that the firm only handles bizarre cases, and that their lawyers all seem to be crazy. As he passes Denny’s office he’s distraught to see Denny performing mouth-to-mouth on Alan, preparing for the Coast Guard exam. Whitney meets with Carolyn Joseph. Her teenage daughter died when she fell asleep at the wheel. Carolyn wants to sue the school for pushing kids too hard to get into a “name” college. The company agrees drop the criminal charges against Leo if he agrees not to come after them; but to Katie’s surprise Leo says no. He needs their money, and they breached the contract. Alan admits to Denny that he’s afraid of water. Sack tells Shirley that they both deserve more than what they’re giving each other. Andrea’s cremation company offers to settle for twenty-five thousand dollars; but she rejects it, much to Sack’s dismay. They’re going to court.
When Lorraine learns that Maureen lost her faith in God after the affair with her pastor, they decide to drop the suit against Joyner… and sue his church instead. Joyner can’t stand the thought of bringing the church into court, so Lorraine and Clarence now hold the upper hand. Whitney makes a point to Judge Webb that depression is experienced by twenty percent of teenagers, and that suicide is their third most common cause of death. She gets the principal to admit that going to a top college does not improve a student’s chances at happiness or success. The company that bought Leo’s life insurance plays hardball until Katie threatens to reveal how they do business in court. They fold, and offer Leo seven hundred and fifty thousand dollars. Leo and Katie share a kiss, and he lets her know he wants to start a relationship. Sack convinces Judge Clark Brown that the business of death has been taking advantage of people grieving the loss of a loved one forever. The judge allows Andrea’s case to proceed to trial.
Andrea propositions Sack, and he steadfastly refuses. Then she shocks him by saying he should marry her. Shirley admits she’s jealous, but agrees that Andrea would be good for him. Shirley also has a heart-to-heart talk with Katie, and makes her think long and hard about loving a man with AIDS. Katie finally realizes she’s not cut out for it. When she tells him, he’s hurt, but he understands. He gives her a gentle kiss on the forehead, and leaves her... sadder but wiser. The Coast Guard rescue tryouts are a total disaster. Alan nearly drowns Denny when he tries to rescue him, and both men have to be pulled from the pool. Denny is angry that he won’t be an officer in the Coast Guard. Judge Webb agrees that the schools must be the first to work toward ending the vicious circle the students are caught up in. He allows the suit to go to trial. Carolyn and Whitney are up for the challenge. Sack and Shirley discuss Andrea’s proposal, and share a tender moment. We know there’s still a spark still there.
On the balcony Denny and Alan fight over the Coast Guard debacle. Eventually Alan apologizes, and they hug. Alan immediately suggest a sleepover. Denny complains that if they have too many, they won’t be special. Alan tells him they’re all special to him. Denny is moved, and they hug again... and then share a laugh about how foolish they looked in that pool.
