Episode 0512 - Made In China
Episode 0512 - Made In China
Shirley rushes Denny to the dreaded 28th floor for a meeting with Lewiston. They are both shocked when Lewiston introduces them to twelve Chinese businessmen who have offered to acquire the firm. Denny calls them Communists. In anger he snaps, draws his two paint-gun pistols, and blasts away. Shirley, who has major issues with their human-rights history, tells Lewiston she refuses to let this be her legacy. While they argue, Shirley learns that Denny has been arrested for breaking into the house of Penelope Kimball, his neighbor. He walked in naked, and climbed into bed with her. Denny claims she flirted with him, and it was an early Christmas present. When Shirley and Alan push him, he admits he was confused, and doesn’t even remember going into her house. It’s his advancing Alzheimer’s, which scares him. He also knows there is an experimental drug showing promising signs of reversing the disease, but it is not ready for human testing. He an Alan are going to appear before the Supreme Court on Friday to argue for Denny’s right to use it.

Katie and Jerry practice in front of a mock up of the Supreme Court trying to find any case to aid their argument. Shirley continues to argue with Lewiston, and later with Sack for not backing her up. Lewiston calls her a bigot for attacking the Chinese, and Shirley swears she’ll take her name off the firm. Lewiston tells her she doesn’t own her name, the firm does. The DA drops the charges against Denny because Penelope didn’t press charges. Denny asks Alan to marry him... and he’s serious. As a spouse, Alan could watch out for him, keep him safe, and make medical decisions when the time comes. Also, Denny’s wealth could pass directly to him at his death, tax-free. Alan tells Denny they are going to the Supreme Court to get him the Alzheimer’s drug. The partners vote to allow the Chinese to acquire the firm, and Shirley vows to fight them in court.

While Shirley is being fitted for her wedding dress, Denny is struck by her beauty… and the fact that her marriage to Sack will end his hope for reconciliation. Jerry and Katie inform Alan that they’ve found a case establishing precedent: a plaintiff was granted the right to use an experimental drug. Judge Byron Fudd presides over Shirley’s case against Lewiston and the firm. Lewiston tells the Judge Fudd that the merger is a legal and binding agreement. Shirley argues that it’s bad enough that the Chinese are buying up much of America’s companies. We cannot let them have control of the law firms, which safeguard our individual liberties. Sack is concerned that Shirley is so consumed with the case, she’s not excited about their upcoming marriage. She convinces him otherwise. As they share a kiss, Denny walks in and makes a jealous wisecrack. Before Shirley can respond, Lewiston walks in: Judge Fudd has ruled the merger valid. Shirley meets with the Chinese businessmen. She voices her distrust, and Mr. Lee tells her she should resign if she cannot serve their interests. She says they’ll have her resignation by the end of the day, and asks them to remove her name from the firm.

Mr. Lee and Mr. Chang meet with Sack, after which Sack informs Alan, Denny, Jerry, and Katie that they have all been replaced. It’s a depressing evening at a local pub when Alan finally announces that they should fire the Chinese. Without knowing Alan’s plan, Sack sets up a meeting with the Chinese. Alan addresses the group, backed up by the rest of the cast. He fires all of the Chinese. When they say he has no grounds he explains that in America, a trial is all about who the jury likes. He also conveys the firm’s past record of winning mostly un-winnable cases week after week. They’ve been fired simply because the new owners didn’t like them. That’s wrongful discharge... and that is winnable. He stresses that he will file a suit, and make the jury fearful of Communist China taking our jobs here in America. They will win millions from the Chinese Corporation. Alan closes by telling them they will agree not to sue on one condition: the litigation department stays, and they get to stay in charge. The Chinese burst into applause. Shirley delivers the good news: they’ve been reinstated, and someone will oversee them for the Chinese.

On the balcony Alan talks wistfully about opening up his own legal-aid firm. He would need start-up money, of course; and he admits he doesn’t like the idea of being poor. Denny points out that if they were married, his money problems would be over. Alan actually begins to consider it, although he thought that if he ever married again it would be for love and romance. Denny counters that Alan does love him; and romance never lasts, but money can. Alan agrees to marry Denny on a dock at Nimmo Bay. Alan Shore and Denny Crane: husband and Mad Cow
