Family Guy Creator to Host the 2013 Oscars

Seth MacFarlane to host Oscars

2nd October 2012

Seth MacFarlane, creator of Family Guy, has been chosen to host the 85th annual Academy Awards next year.

MacFarlane said the awards would be a great new challenge as he'd need to uphold the "classic Hollywood showmanship" while remaining entertaining with modern humour.

The Academy is reportedly trying to reach to a younger audience with the Awards show and MacFarlane was chosen to do so.

"It's truly an overwhelming privilege to be asked to host the Oscars," he told The Guardian.

"My thoughts upon hearing the news were, one, I will do my utmost to live up to the high standards set forth by my predecessors; and two, I hope they don't find out I hosted the Charlie Sheen Roast."

Yesterday, he posted his response to the news on YouTube in a minute long video where he breaks the news to his dad.

'I've invited you here today to tell you I'm hosting the Oscars,' MacFarlane says. 'This should be huge news to you.'

'Of course, it's wonderful news,' his father replies. 'But also the fact that you're getting almost brand-new bathing suits is also good news.'
Along with creating Family Guy, MacFarlane directed the 2012 blockbuster TED and is the co-creator of FOUR shows American Dad and The Cleveland Show.

The 85th Academy Awards will be held on 24th February 2013.

Past hosts of the Awards have included Billy Crystal (this year), Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin, James Franco and Anne Hathaway, Hugh Jackman, Jon Stewart and Ellen DeGeneres.
