On My Way - Season 3, Ep 14
By Faith-Ashleigh Wong
With Regionals just days away, the New Directions get hit with a bit of “show choir terrorism” when Sebastian attempts to play dirty to seal a victory for the Warblers. The ultimatum: pull Rachel out of the competition or a scandalous picture of Finn will be released to the World Wide Web for all to see.
This cause sparks to fly between Rachel and Finn – Rachel can’t afford to withdraw from the competition as she needs it to help boost her NYADA application, meanwhile obviously Finn does not want the cyber world and beyond to think he wears red stilettos in the nude outside school hours.
Before the New Directions can decide whether to thump Sebastian or to cave to his blackmail, an attempted suicide rocks McKinley High to its very core. I was very impressed with how this issue was handled and depicted onscreen. The suicide sequence was juxtaposed and edited perfectly with Blaine’s chilling solo performance of Cough Syrup which was a fitting choice of song. I don’t think anyone saw this coming and even though the actual act is never seen, the build-up to it and the impact is just as hard-hitting.
Once again show creator Ryan Murphy reminds everyone that Glee is not just about singing but has stories and characters with depth too. I thought it was very important to show that a significant amount of the bullying occurred online; not everyone may be able to relate to gay teen suicide but social media is something that has become so prominent in almost everyone’s everyday lives and so bears universal meaning.
It was also really great to see that Sebastian does have a heart after all! Having unwittingly played a part in the bullying as well, we see a different side to Sebastian as he calls off the blackmail against the New Directions and says he would much rather beat the New Directions fair and square.
The most moving scene for me was between Karofsky and Kurt near the end. Hello tears! I loved how their relationship has now well and truly come full circle. Such a painful yet beautiful scene and I was very impressed in particular with Max Adler’s performance in this episode.
At Regionals, we see the Warblers and the New Directions go head to head singing songs that inspire and motivate. I thought Sebastian held his own well as the new leading man. I liked the gospel feel of Stand but the upbeat Glad You Came with the slick choreography was definitely closer to the Warblers trademark.
The New Directions just get better and better with each competition, don’t they?! Loved their mash up of Fly and I Believe I Can Fly – even though both songs are completely different in style and tempo, they were married together in a really great and catchy arrangement. The former Trouble Tones girls did a great rendition of Kelly Clarkson’s hit single Stronger which I felt was a fitting tribute to Karofsky.
With a renewed appreciation for life following recent events, Finn and Rachel decide to tie the knot right after Regionals. However someone doesn’t quite make it to the wedding. [cue loud audible gasp] That was me, literally! My heart almost jumped out of my chest...talk about a cliff-hanger ending!
