Hugh Laurie wades into end of House stoush
House star Hugh Laurie has hit back at claims that he is to blame for the decision to end the popular series.
Last week the show’s producers and Laurie issued a joint statement announcing the decision to end the series.
The news has been met with disappointment from fans;
disappointment which has turned to rumour and speculation about the “real”
reasons behind the decision.
Laurie took exception to a New York Post article which
claimed that the series was being wound up because he was "tired" of the show.
In a statement released to tvguide.com Laurie vehemently denied
the claims, and took a swing at the journalists behind it.
“Let me say unequivocally
that I love my job, and work harder at it than most journalists work at theirs.
As we explained in our press release, we were trying to preserve some of the
character's mystique; we never wanted to over-stay our welcome.”
The
star said that the specious claims were drawn out a remark he made “five years
ago about a different subject.”
In
a broad swipe Laurie derided the New York Post’s assertions to be revealing “the
truth” behind the decision.
Laurie
said what purported to be “the truth” was merely “modern journalistic shorthand
for ‘not even remotely the truth but it's creepy enough so let's go with it’.”
House
will conclude at the close of its eighth season, which is currently screening on
Sundays at 8.30pm on TV3.
