Crossing The Line - Season 2, Ep13
As Cathy revels in Sean’s return following his two-week stint with a traveling carnival, Paul looks to cover up his real reason for leaving his job – the threat of a random drug test that would reveal his cocaine use. With Paul fighting to convince their insurance company to make good on a medical bill they are refusing to pay, Cathy decides to honor her late friend Lee by running in the Minneapolis New Year’s Eve Marathon. And as Dr. Todd warns her of the dangers, especially with so little time to train, Adam accepts an invitation to spend New Year’s Eve with his friend Mia.
While Adam ponders what the New Year’s invitation means for the future of his relationship with Mia, Cathy tries to register for the race, only to discover that she’s missed the deadline. Undeterred, she returns to Lee’s apartment and takes his unopened registration package to use as her own. Then, after Cathy catches him struggling to salvage some cocaine he accidentally spilled in the snow, Paul admits to his drug problem. Though Cathy offers to cancel her race plans in order to get him some help, Paul insists that she run and promises to meet her at the finish line clean and sober. But after Cathy leaves for the marathon, Paul can’t resist taking one more hit.
As Cathy starts the run with Sean at her side for support, Adam and Dr. Todd wait up ahead to cheer her on. While Sean is forced to drop out because of the cold, Cathy gamely presses on and is surprised to see her son waiting for her after postponing his plans with Mia. And though a quick exam by Dr. Todd suggests that she needs to take a break, Cathy forges on. Meanwhile, fueled by cocaine, Paul heads to the insurance company’s New Year’s party to confront the representative who has continued to deny Cathy’s claim. When she continues to stand fast in the face of his passionate appeal, Paul storms off in order to be at the finish line when Cathy arrives. However, just as Mia surprises Adam by showing up at the race, too, Paul dies from a heart attack before he can get there. And when she crosses the finish line to see Paul waiting alongside the ghosts of Lee and Marlene, Cathy realizes that tragedy has struck yet again.
