Thirty Of Silver/One Of Gold - Ep 6
JULIE HUE delivers the cash that MARTY made from conning Freddie and then contacts PIAK to buy him Buddah sticks. 20,000 is all PIAK can do for the money MARTY has in his possession. MARTY has no choice. How the mighty have fallen. MARTY is so desperate that he even goes and picks up the sticks himself.
ANDY, in trying to help Marty and hope he comes good, lines up someone who may be able to get the drugs to New Zealand and it turns out to be BIG ARI, There’s no love lost between ARI and MARTY. Even ARI believes it’s too hard to operate the way MARTY wants. He could move it by boat but that would take months and MARTY doesn’t have months. ANDY realises that he is being trapped and that his choice when it comes to MARTY’s health are being quickly eroded.
Unbeknownst to MARTY, TERRY has started to hatch a plan to get ANDY to lure him back to Scotland. With MARTY preparing to come back ANDY reluctantly starts the preparation to do what Terry wants - kill Marty. ANDY enlists two friends his cousin JIMMY SMITH and an associate.
Meanwhile BEN is trying to get an extradition order to get Marty out of Singapore and back to New Zealand. But even that smashes up against a brick wall. There is no extradition agreement between Singapore and New Zealand.
The pressure is mounting because MARTY doesn’t even have money to pay his staff. He is desperately hanging out for the deal in the UK to work out. He can’t get this one wrong.
CAROLE’s problems with MAX also continue. Even though he’s moved the family and she occasionally comes to visit. There is still tension between them over her continuing involvement in the case. She still doesn’t know if she has finally sacrificed her relationship and her family.
The preparations for Clark’s are underway and the gun is delivered to FREDDIE and plans are put in place as ANDY eventually manages to persuade MARTY to return to the UK. MARTY is desperate and he will do whatever he has to do to keep his head above water.
ANDY, then to his horror, finds out that TERRY wants him to do the deed. He wants ANDY to kill Marty. When MARTY finally arrives in the UK he finds out that ANDY wants out. The Scotland deal will be his last job.
As MARTY heads to Scotland CAROLE returns to Opua to see MAX and tell him that all will be well with them. When the case is over she will join him and the kids. BEN has helped mend the rift between the two. Even though he has feelings for her, he cares enough to let her go and not jeopardise her family and her relationship.
The final journey to Scotland starts and MARTY is unaware what’s awaiting him. JULIE is also distracted by DEB, Andy’s partner. Everything is in place and MARTY is driven to his unexpected killing place.
ANDY pulls the trigger. MARTY is dead. It is ugly and messy. Killing isn’t easy.
ANDY and JIMMY take the body back to Andy’s garage. There they chop off his hands, gut the body and then ANDY has to smash in his teeth. They wrap the body up and dump it in Eccelstone Delph. JULIE and DEB go off to have a holiday in Spain, with JULIE unaware of what was happening in the garage beside her.
While ANDY reports back to his new boss, TERRY CLARK, ANDY tells him that the deed has been done. MARTY JOHNSTONE is dead. ANDY disposes of the gun and Marty’s severed hands in a river in Scotland.
It looks as if they have got away with it but then there is a twist. Marty’s body hadn’t completely disappeared into the deep and had hooked itself on a pipe and a diver finds the mangled corpse on a ledge in the flooded quarry.
The police in Auckland and the journos of the Star find out. Marty is no more. They are all left high and dry. For BEN and CAROLE the case is over, a case they have worked on and tracked for years has been ripped from them with the murder of Marty. He will never face the force of the law.
JULIE identifies the body. They had left the golden medallion around his neck. The long life charm delivered Marty very short one.
The investigation in Lancashire continues and JIMMY SMITH is arrested and turns on ANDY who is picked up at Heathrow Airport. ANDY gives up CLARK who is arrested and charged with conspiracy.
At least BEN has a small victory and has managed to draw the link to Alexander Sinclair and inform the UK police that he is Terry Clark and finally get one over the journalists from The Auckland Star and tell them that Terry is finally in gaol and being charged with murder.
CAROLE moves to Opua to be with her family and BEN continues to be a cop in Auckland but now with new powers to investigate the growing problem of drugs and crime.
CLARK dies of a supposed heart attack. But many believe that isn’t what really happened. ANDY goes to goal and serves a life term and is released to die of cancer in March of 2011.
The Syndicate instigated changes in New Zealand law with police procedures including the development of specialist drug squads, increased personnel in customs and kicked off two Royal Commissions into police corruption covering the drug trade in both Australia and New Zealand.
Marty Johnstone proved to be the catalyst that changed the face of crime and policing in New Zealand.
