A headless corpse is found in a field after it is accidentally run over by a tractor. The head is found by the Jeffersonian's new squintern, the brilliant Oliver Wells, whose enthusiasm for his job often leads him to overlook common sense, and whose intellect often causes him to behave arrogantly. The victim is identified as Benji Garcia, a young man who wanted to be a scientist and was about to be the first person in his family to go to college. He had a tricked-out pickup truck with glow-in-the-dark paint that his bother says people might have killed for. Benji's anger-prone ex-girlfriend Courtney hated the truck... and says that Benji wanted to build a time machine. Sweets thinks that Benji wanted to go back into the past to fix something in his life, but what? Suspects include Courtney, Benji's older brother, and a disgraced theoretical physicist who was also investigating time travel. The case takes a bizarre twist when they discover another body, which appears to be Benji himself... twenty years older.
Meanwhile, Booth and Brennan argue over Booth's investment in asteroid mining, which he feels is a solid investment in Christine's future, but Brennan thinks is an impractical waste of money... though she begins to reconsider when Oliver analyzes her as being narrow-minded. Also, the time travel element of the case inspires the Jeffersonian team to discuss where they would choose to go if they could travel back in time.
